The biggest name available before the 2011 baseball trade deadline was Carlos Beltran of the New York Mets. On Thursday, the Mets officially traded Carlos Beltran to the San Francisco Giants. In return, New York is reportedly getting a package headlined by former first round pick Zach Wheeler.
The Mets, who still have to pay most of what Carlos Beltran is due for the rest of this season, made the trade to save a little bit of money and also obtain prospects for the future. Though they didn’t get a huge return, getting Wheeler could pay off down the road.
As for the Giants, this trade was a no-brainer. While they have a fantastic pitching staff, their offense has been poor. Especially with star catcher Buster Posey out for the season, the Giants have found it difficult to score runs. Carlos Beltran changes all of that. He’ll step in right away and be a force in the middle of their lineup.
Carlos Beltran is playing for a new contract. The Giants are looking to win a second consecutive World Series. This match couldn’t get any better.
