Unlike the Sonos Play:5, which is a 5-driver speaker system complete with 2 tweeters, 2 mid-range drivers, and 1 subwoofer all in one sleek box, the Play:3 is less impressive with its 1 tweeter and 2 mid-range drivers. You would think though that it means a significantly superior sound quality, but it really can still deliver in the sound department. And if it is the lack of an active subwoofer you are worried about, you don’t have to worry since it can still give you the wonderful booming sounds that will annoy your neighbour till they’re blue with its built-in passive bass radiator.
The good thing about the Play:3 though is that it still comes with built-in wireless capability, so that you can wirelessly deliver music to any room in your home. All you need to do is to either wire one Play:3 or a Sonos BRIDGE to your home network using an ethernet cable, and then just keep on adding speakers to other rooms. And if you’re wondering how many speakers you can add, that’s a mind boggling 32 for you!
You can also control the Play:3 using your iPhone, iPad, or any Android mobile device by downloading a free controller app. Of course, you can also just shell out an additional €349 for a dedicated Sonos Controller.
But the best thing about the Play:3, which is also perhaps the only thing it has that tops the Play:5, is the low price. The Play:3 is a full €100 less than the Play:5 at only €200.
