A year ago, some would argue that Ubaldo Jimenez is the best pitcher in all of baseball. On Saturday, the Colorado Rockies agreed to trade Ubaldo Jimenez to the Cleveland Indians for four prospects. In the big picture, this is a very surprising move for the Rockies. Teams rarely trade away franchise-level pitchers.

That said, Colorado is getting very good prospects in return. The Indians are sending Alex White and Drew Pomeranz, both pitching prospects, in addition to Matt McBride, a first baseman. A fourth minor leaguer will be named later.

Despite all of Ubaldo Jimenez’s talents, he hasn’t been very good this season. He’s 6-9 with a 4.46 ERA. Last season, the native of the Dominican Republic was 19-8 with a 2.88 ERA.

For the Indians, who trail the Detroit Tigers by two games in the AL Central, trading for Ubaldo Jimenez is huge. He may instantly become the best player on their team. Plus, perhaps most importantly, making the playoffs is now no longer a pipe dream.
