It seems like yesterday that Lofa Tatupu was leading the Seattle Seahawks to the Super Bowl. Today, the Seahawks released the 28-year-old linebacker out of USC. Seattle asked him to take a cut in pay. After Lofa Tatupu refused, the Seahawks cut ties.

This was definitely a surprising move by the Seahawks. Lofa Tatupu was the heart and soul of the team’s defense.

However, if you take a look at the stats, you could see that the linebacker out of USC isn’t nearly as productive as he was early in his career. Last season, he finished with 88 tackles. While not horrible, he had at least 104 tackles in each of his first three seasons in the NFL. Lofa Tatupu also only has two sacks, two forced fumbles, two interceptions and no fumble recoveries in the last three seasons.

Logically, the move to release Lofa Tatupu made sense. And really, that’s all that matters in today’s sports world.
