This time of year, the Pittsburgh Pirates are usually selling off their good players to bolster the rosters of playoff teams. This year, a funny thing happened on the way to the baseball trade deadline. The Pirates are a playoff contender — and they’re acting like it.
The Pirates are currently 4.5 games back of the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central. To help in their playoff push, Pittsburgh made a pair of deals at the trade deadline. First, the Pirates traded for Derrek Lee from the Baltimore Orioles. Then, the Pirates traded for Ryan Ludwick of the San Diego Padres.
While both Lee and Ludwick are on the later half of their careers, a hot stretch could push Pittsburgh into the playoffs. It’s a longshot that the Pirates actually make the playoffs but these two trades give the team a chance.
Props to the Pirates ownership for recognizing the opportunity and making the most of it.
