The Boston Red Sox have been searching high and low for a starting pitcher to add to their rotation. They almost traded for Rich Harden, however that deal fell apart at the last second. On Sunday, the Red Sox made their moving by trading for Erik Bedard of the Seattle Mariners in a three-team deal.

Erik Bedard used to be a very good starting pitcher. But in recent years, he’s been destroyed by injuries. Since the end of the 2007 season, Erik Bedard has only pitched in 46 games. This season, he has a 3.45 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP and a record of 4-7. In 91.1 innings pitched, he has 87 strikeouts and has given up only 77 hits.

The trade sent Erik Bedard and Josh Fields to the Red Sox, Trayvon Robinson and Chih Hsien Chiang to the Mariners and Stephen Fife, Juan Rodriguez and Tim Federowicz to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Mariners might have been able to get more for Erik Bedard but he had a disaster of a final outing for Seattle. Against the Tampa Bay Rays, Bedard gave up five earned runs and couldn’t even get out of the second inning. The Red Sox apparently looked past that performance and see a starting pitcher than can help in their goal to win a World Series championship.
