The New England Patriots needed help along their defensive line. On Thursday morning, the Patriots decided to take a gamble and acquire one of the most talented lineman in the entire NFL who happens to be one of the most troubled people in the league. Yes, we are talking about Albert Haynesworth.
The trade with the Washington Redskins calls for the Patriots to surrender only a 2013 fifth-round selection. Considering Haynesworth only makes $5 million this season, there isn’t much risk for the Patriots in terms of giving up value or even monetarily. But chemistry-wise and character-wise, Haynesworth is a gigantic risk.
He’s had a troubled past that has included many run-ins with police, coaches and teammates. He just seems like a miserable person who can’t control himself. Speaking frankly, Haynesworth is someone who could be locked up for life or found dead and no one would be surprised.
That said, he’s an amazing football player when he’s in the right frame of mind. If the Patriots can get him to buy into their system and work hard, they will have gotten a huge steal in this trade. But that is a huge “if”.
