The NBA owners and the NBA players union will resume talks on August 1st as the two sides continue to try to work out a deal that would end the NBA lockout. At this meeting, the owners will be represented by David Stern and San Antonio Spurs owners Peter Holt. The players will be represented by Billy Hunter and Derek Fisher.

Will progress be made during these talks that could end the NBA lockout? Honestly, no. This NBA lockout is going to stretch on for a long, long time. Talks won’t get serious until the players are missing checks and the owners watch their arenas sit empty. Until then, it’ll just be billionaires playing chicken with millionaires.

In fact, there’s a growing sense among insiders that the 2011-12 NBA season is in serious jeopardy. The owners seem willing to lockout the players for as long as they need to in order to get a great deal. The players, too, seem willing to hold strong.

This will get ugly.
